Congressman Neal Dunn of Florida has introduced a new piece of legislation aimed at providing financial assistance to local governments and electric cooperatives affected by natural disasters. The proposed bill, known as the FEMA Loan Interest Payment Relief Act, aims to reimburse these entities for interest payments on loans used in their recovery efforts.

According to Congressman Dunn, “Communities impacted by natural disasters are often left with staggering financial burdens while waiting for federal reimbursements on their disaster loans.” He emphasized that “municipal governments and electric coops should not have to face undue financial burdens for the sluggish response from FEMA.”

The bill is designed to alleviate financial stress on these communities by covering the accrued interest on loans necessary for recovery after disasters. It applies retroactively to loans taken within nine years prior to the enactment, thereby offering relief to communities still dealing with the financial aftermath of previous disasters.

This legislative move seeks to shift the financial responsibility for interest payments on disaster recovery loans to the federal government, helping communities focus on rebuilding without the added burden of loan interest.

A copy of the bill is available for public reading.
