Florida A&M University (FAMU) has appointed Henry Burris as Acting Head Football Coach, effective immediately. Burris previously served as the university’s Quarterbacks Coach and Co-Offensive Coordinator. He will hold this interim role until a permanent head coach is selected.
The announcement was made by FAMU President Marva B. Johnson, who expressed gratitude to outgoing coach James Colzie III for his leadership during a challenging period for the program. “Excellence is the standard that extends across every aspect of our institution—from academics and research to athletics and community engagement,” said President Johnson. “As the nation’s top public HBCU, we are committed to operational excellence in everything we do. Our football program and all Rattler sports are critical drivers of university pride, student recruitment, alumni engagement, and institutional momentum. Success on the field elevates our entire university, creates economic opportunity for our region, and inspires the next generation of Rattler scholars and leaders. This leadership transition reflects our commitment building on the proud legacy of FAMU athletics and its storied superstars, while transforming our programs to meet the demands of today’s collegiate landscape—including competing in a dynamic recruiting environment shaped by NIL opportunities and positioning FAMU at the championship level our community deserves.”
President Johnson highlighted her focus on competitive excellence as central to her vision for FAMU. She noted that athletic success supports academic recruitment efforts, increases alumni involvement, and raises FAMU’s profile nationally. The university continues to invest in athletics infrastructure, coaching staff, and operational systems aimed at ensuring long-term competitiveness for all Rattler sports programs.
Burris is recognized as a two-time championship quarterback with experience in high-performance environments. In his new role, he will oversee the team’s transition period, work on maintaining player cohesion, support recruitment activities, and keep the program prepared as it moves forward.
The appointment underscores FAMU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its football program both on and off the field. The university aims to build upon its traditions while adapting to new challenges within college athletics.
“We wish him continued success in his future endeavors,” President Johnson said regarding Colzie’s departure.
The move comes as part of broader plans by FAMU’s leadership to enhance student-athlete experiences and maintain football’s position as a flagship program that brings recognition and resources to the campus community.
