Florida State University’s women’s basketball team secured a 77-74 overtime win against Wake Forest on Sunday at LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This victory marks the end of the regular season for the Seminoles, who now hold a 35-20 all-time record over the Demon Deacons.
The Seminoles improved to 10-20 overall and 5-13 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Their last overtime win was against Clemson on March 3, 2024, and their most recent overtime road victory occurred at Houston on November 19, 2022.
Florida State dominated the boards with a 49-39 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points. All players contributed with at least two points and one rebound each, while the bench added a total of 28 points.
Senior guard Sydney Bowles led Florida State with 17 points on six-of-14 shooting. She also recorded three assists, six rebounds, and one steal. Junior guard Emma Risch followed with 13 points and made two three-pointers. Risch achieved a career-high three steals and matched her personal best with seven rebounds.
Graduate forward Allie Kubek and graduate guard Jasmine Shavers each scored 11 points. Kubek shot five-of-10 from the field, led the team with eight rebounds, and added a block and a steal. Shavers hit two threes and went five-of-six from the free throw line while setting a career high with six assists.
Freshman guard Mari Gerton played for 15 minutes, posting career highs in both assists (three) and rebounds (four), along with one steal.
Wake Forest started strong in the first quarter but could not maintain their lead as Florida State stayed close throughout. Bowles converted an early turnover into points before Shavers hit a three-pointer. Contributions from Amaya Bonner and Kubek helped keep Florida State within reach by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Bowles tied the game with free throws before Gerton gave Florida State its first lead with a basket inside. The Seminoles built momentum through defensive plays and scoring runs but trailed by two at halftime.
The teams exchanged leads several times in the third quarter before Florida State entered the fourth ahead by one point after Risch’s late three-pointer. Kubek scored six quick points early in the final period as both teams continued to trade baskets.
A crucial put-back by Bowles gave Florida State a narrow lead in regulation’s closing seconds, but Wake Forest forced overtime with a last-second layup. In overtime, key three-pointers from both sides kept it close until Shavers connected from beyond the arc for Florida State. The Seminoles maintained their edge through free throws down the stretch to secure victory.
Florida State will next compete in Duluth, Georgia at GAS South Arena during the Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament starting Wednesday, March 4. They are scheduled to face Georgia Tech in their opening-round matchup.
