Florida State University is celebrating its 175th anniversary with a series of events planned throughout the year to honor its history and look ahead to the future.
FSU President Richard McCullough commented on the milestone, saying, “As we mark Florida State University’s 175th anniversary, we honor a legacy of groundbreaking research, innovative teaching, and an outstanding track record of student success that built FSU into one of the Top 25 public universities in the nation. While we celebrate our past, we are also experiencing unprecedented momentum. From posting record graduation rates and research expenditures to launching FSU Health and receiving transformative philanthropic gifts, every day we are building upon our great traditions and past achievements to propel Florida State University to even greater heights.”
The university traces its origins back to 1851 when it was founded as the Seminary West of the Suwannee River. The site where FSU’s Westcott fountain stands is recognized as the oldest continuous location for higher education in Florida. Over time, FSU has expanded from a small institution on a few acres to a campus covering 1,810 acres statewide with 390 buildings. Its main campus in Tallahassee includes 216 buildings on over 487 acres.
FSU now consists of 17 colleges and operates facilities such as the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, FSU Panama City campus, The Ringling Museum in Sarasota, an international branch campus in Panama City (Panama), and study centers in London, Florence, and Valencia.
The anniversary committee for this celebration is led by FSU First Lady Jai Vartikar. She stated, “This year is more than a commemoration — it is a heartfelt invitation for every member of the FSU family to come together, celebrate our outstanding achievements, honor our vibrant traditions, and dream boldly about the next chapter. FSU has always been defined by our spirit of connection and support — so let’s join hands, share our stories, and build an even brighter future together. I can’t wait to celebrate with you and make memories that will inspire generations to come!”
Events include a cupcake kickoff at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21 at the Student Union hosted by New Student and Family Programs. The university’s official birthday falls on January 24.
Later this year during Homecoming week students will gather on Landis Green for another celebration.
Throughout its history spanning nearly two centuries since Florida achieved statehood only six years before its founding—FSU has adapted to changing needs in education while maintaining its focus on innovation.
