Florida State University (FSU) has been recognized as the top university in Florida for innovation and economic impact, according to TIME’s first World’s Top Universities 2026 rankings. The new ranking system evaluates how universities convert research into practical results, including patents, industry partnerships, commercialization efforts, and broader economic influence.

FSU outperformed other institutions in Florida and secured a strong position nationally and internationally. In the innovation and economic impact category, FSU ranked first in Florida, 18th among U.S. public universities, 35th among all U.S. universities (public and private), and 60th globally out of 500 assessed institutions.

TIME’s innovation and economic impact pillar assesses how well universities translate knowledge into real-world applications. This includes evaluating the strength of patents held by the university, the influence of its research activities, graduates’ movement into leadership roles at major companies, and efforts to expand educational access through online programs. These factors collectively measure a university’s contribution to economic growth and technological advancement.

In TIME’s overall global rankings—which consider academic capacity and performance (60%), innovation and economic impact (30%), and global engagement (10%)—FSU placed 195th among all public and private universities worldwide. Among U.S. public universities specifically, FSU was ranked 40th; it was also listed as 156th among public universities globally.

The rankings were created in partnership with Statista. Nearly 2,000 universities from around the world were evaluated for inclusion; only the top 500 made the final list. More details about the methodology can be found on TIME’s website: https://time.com/6975270/worlds-best-universities-2026/.
