Florida State University’s women’s lacrosse team lost to the University of California, Berkeley 10-9 in their first conference game of the season on Friday at California Memorial Stadium.
The match began with both teams struggling offensively. Florida State’s Lola Mancuso scored first after converting a free position shot ten minutes into the first quarter. Following a green card against California, Meg Kenny capitalized on a man-up opportunity and soon added another goal, giving Florida State an early 3-0 lead.
Florida State’s defense held California scoreless for the first 20 minutes before the Golden Bears scored their opening goal. Kenny responded by scoring her third goal, but California answered with two goals. Kenny finished the half with four goals, helping Florida State take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Summer Harrell added another goal just before halftime to extend the lead to 6-3.
California came back in the third quarter with three unanswered goals to tie the game at 6-6. Harrell put Florida State ahead again, but California quickly tied it up at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams traded goals early in the final period until California took a 9-8 lead. Lydia Ward drew a foul and converted a free position shot to tie it at 9-9. However, California scored with under two minutes left to secure the win.
Kenny led Florida State with four goals in this game and now has seven for the season. She is Florida State’s second player this year to score four goals in one game. Harrell contributed two goals from two shots and recorded two assists.
