Florida State University’s women’s golf team is in second place after the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Elin Pudas Remler, representing Florida State, is tied for third individually and trails the leader by four strokes.
The tournament features a strong field with 12 of the participating teams ranked in the top 30 nationally. Texas leads both the individual and team standings after day one. Farah O’Keefe from Texas posted a seven-under-par 64 to lead individually, while her teammate Lauren Kim is three strokes behind with a score of 68. Texas was also the only team to finish under par in the opening round.
“We like to play hard golf courses and this is a hard course,” said head coach Amy Bond, who celebrated her birthday yesterday. “I thought the girls played with great composure today especially on holes 11 through 14 when the wind really blew.
“I also thought the girls took advantage of the outside distractions of the wonderful number of spectators and the cameras from the Golf Channel. They all used those distractions to their advantages.”
Florida State currently sits ahead of several highly ranked teams, including three in the top ten and eight in the top twenty. The Seminoles are leading all Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) teams in attendance and hold an eight-stroke advantage over Wake Forest (tied for fourth) and nine strokes over Duke (tied for sixth).
Pudas Remler recorded her second under-par round of 69 this spring season; she previously achieved this score at another collegiate event earlier in January. She finished Monday’s round with three birdies and did not go above par during play.
Sophia Fullbrook and Layla Pedrique also contributed even-par rounds of 71 for Florida State, tying them for eighth place individually. Both players made three birdies each during their rounds.
Fullbrook has now played five out of seven rounds at par or better this spring, while Pedrique matched her career-best score.
After one round, Florida State stands at 287 strokes as a team, trailing Texas by eight shots. Auburn holds third place with a score of 294, followed by Wake Forest and LSU tied at fourth with scores of 295 each.
