Florida Republicans have filed legislation that would require social media giants to give a reason why they banned users from their platforms.
The bill would require Big Tech to give a reason to the user for why they are banned within 30 days, WCTV reported.
“All we’re doing here is saying, hey there’s a new business regulation. If you’re ‘X’ amount of size you cannot discriminate based on political viewpoint,” State Rep. Anthony Sabatini, who is sponsoring the House bill, said, the news media reported.
If the bill becomes law, users will be able to sue social media companies for a minimum of $75,000 if they are banned without justifiable cause. Republican pundits and politicians feel banning and censorship are tools used by big tech companies to suppress the truth.
Multiple bills have been brought up ahead of the 2021 Legislative Session. North Dakota legislators have also introduced similar bills. If the bill becomes law, President Donald Trump could theoretically sue social media platforms for any future bans.
