City of Tallahassee’s Biannual Event Returns Oct. 21
This time of year is synonymous with football, pumpkin spice and fall cleaning. To help you declutter your home and garage, the City of Tallahassee's "Cash for Trash" is back. The biannual event will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City's Community Beautification and Waste Management facility, located at 2727 Municipal Way, near Messer Field. It's a great way to get rid of all your unwanted items.
"Cash for Trash" is traditionally held each year on the third Saturday in April and October. It allows City residential utility customers to properly dispose of household trash items that are too large to fit in their 96-gallon garbage containers, as well as household hazardous waste.
As a thank you, participating City residential utility customers with an active garbage service account will receive a $5 credit toward their utility bill. To receive the credit, customers must present a City utility bill before offloading materials. Customers can make multiple trips; however, only one credit per utility bill will be issued. This allows customers disposing of items for their neighbors to do so and assist them in reaping the benefits of "Cash for Trash."
Examples of items residents may bring to "Cash for Trash" include furniture, large and small household appliances, tires (limit four per customer; no commercial tires), household hazardous waste and electronic items (including computers and computer parts). Batteries, cleaners, paints, pesticides and solvents are also accepted. These household hazardous waste items can have a serious impact on the environment if improperly disposed of through the trash or sewer system.
Although the City encourages residential utility customers to use their every-other-week bulky item collection service for disposing of large items behind the curb, "Cash for Trash" is especially useful for those who live in apartments or have several large items to dispose.
This event is not for commercial customers. Also, no household garbage, yard waste or construction/demolition debris will be accepted.
The City continues to be a leader in the field of sustainability. Events and programs, such as "Cash for Trash" and single-stream recycling, put into action the organization's commitment to environmental-friendly practices.
"Cash for Trash" is coordinated by the City's Community Beautification and Waste Management department. For more information, visit Talgov.com/YOU or call Your Own Utilities at 850-891-4968.
