Monday, Oct. 2, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD), with assistance from the United States Marshals Service, located and arrested 26-year-old Rahiym Sanders in Alachua County, following the home invasion robbery and subsequent shooting of a TPD officer that occurred on Sept. 25.
A swift and thorough investigation conducted by TPD's Violent Crimes Unit revealed Sanders was the second suspect that entered the home in the 2300 block of Sandpiper Street with 25-year-old John'Darious Wright. A responding officer interrupted the targeted home invasion robbery in progress, was subsequently shot by Wright and sustained serious injuries. Wright and Sanders both fled the scene.
Detectives collected physical and electronic evidence that helped them identify Sanders and develop probable cause for his arrest.
"When this incident first occurred, I stood before the community and said we were not going to rest until we located and arrested the individuals responsible for injuring one of our own, and that is exactly what happened," Police Chief Lawrence Revell said. "The injured officer has been through multiple surgeries, and he is now in stable condition. Thankfully, he is expected to recover. Despite the circumstances, he has been in good spirits surrounded by family, friends and coworkers. He has shown resilience and so have the other officers involved in the incident and other members of this agency. While their bravery is to be applauded, it should go without saying that violence brought against the men and women wearing these uniforms has no place in this community. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with the State Attorney's Office to make sure every person involved is brought to justice."
At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, and additional arrests could be forthcoming.
The swift arrest of Sanders and Wright is a testament to the agency's commitment to working diligently and collaboratively to apprehend violent offenders.
