Today, the Tallahassee City Commission officially appointed Amy Toman to the position of City Attorney. Prior to her appointment, Toman served as the Interim City Attorney since November 2023. She joined the City in September 2018 as the Deputy City Attorney.

"The opportunity to serve in this position is an honor and privilege," Toman said. "For more than 20 years, I've dedicated my career to public service, and I look forward to continuing the City Attorney's Office's strong legacy of exemplary legal practice."

Toman earned her undergraduate degree (magna cum laude) from Boston College and her Juris Doctorate from Loyola University of Chicago. She is a member in good standing with the Florida Bar and the Bar of Illinois and a member of the Tallahassee Women Lawyers Association and the Tallahassee Bar Association. She also holds a Certified Public Manager designation from Florida State University.

Toman began her career in private practice in Chicago and relocated to Florida in 1996, where she has since dedicated her career to public service. Her past positions include Executive Director of the Florida Elections Commission, Deputy General Counsel for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and Attorney Analyst for the Florida Senate Committee on Children, Families and Elder Affairs.

Her career focus on ethics, public records and open government led to Toman serving on the steering committee for the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws, and she was elected to serve as the national organization's president in 2019.

The City Attorney's office provides legal counsel and representation to the Tallahassee City Commission, City Manager, City departments and City-appointed boards and commissions. The office provides legal advice at Commission meetings, performs legal research and offers advisory opinions, responds to requests from Commission and city staff to draft or review contracts, ordinances and other legal documents and prosecutes and defends lawsuits to which the City is a party.
