Today, Congressman Neal Dunn from Florida's 2nd District cast his vote in favor of H.R. 9495, known as the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. The proposed legislation aims to offer tax relief to Americans who have been held hostage by terrorist organizations. Additionally, it seeks to revoke the tax-exempt status of non-profit entities found to be supporting such groups.

Congressman Dunn highlighted the challenges faced by former hostages upon their return home. “Americans held by groups like Hamas have endured some of the cruelest treatment imaginable at the hands of terrorists. Unfortunately, when they return home after this horrific ordeal, many find that the IRS has issued substantial tax penalties and interest for tax bills that went unpaid during their captivity,” he stated.

He further explained the impact of these financial burdens on recovering individuals: “Such bills put undue stress on those who are still recovering from the trauma of captivity. This legislation will give victims the peace of mind they deserve as they recover from the torment of their confinement.”

The bill also empowers the president to remove tax-exempt status from any non-profit organization found providing material support to terrorist entities. "There should never be any concern that a group enjoying tax-exempt status is supporting the very organizations that are imprisoning and terrorizing American citizens," Dunn added. He expressed satisfaction with the House's approval and urged prompt consideration by the Senate.
