Chauncey Wiggins set a new career-high with 23 points, leading five Florida State players in double figures as the Seminoles defeated Stanford 88-80 at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The win marks Florida State’s second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) victory, following their recent win over Cal.
Florida State now holds a 10-12 overall record and is 3-6 in ACC play. Stanford drops to 14-8 overall and matches Florida State with a 3-6 conference record.
The Seminoles established their largest lead of the ACC season by going up by 19 points in the second half. They controlled play inside, outscoring Stanford 38-30 in the paint, and also forced 11 turnovers, scoring 18 points off those opportunities.
Lajae Jones opened the game with a dunk from the tip-off and finished with 18 points, including 13 in the first half, along with five rebounds and two assists. Robert McCray V contributed 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Alex Steen added 12 points on perfect shooting from the field, while Kobe MaGee scored 10 points and led the team with six rebounds.
Stanford took an early lead but Florida State responded with a run to take control before halftime. The Seminoles led by eight at halftime and extended their advantage after the break with key contributions from Wiggins and MaGee.
Wiggins scored 16 of his points in the second half—his highest total for any half this season—and made four three-pointers while hitting seven of eight free throws. “Wiggins’s 23 points set a new career-high scoring mark,” according to Florida State’s report.
MaGee hit two three-pointers and has now made multiple threes in thirteen games this season. Steen was perfect from the field and capped a crucial run that gave Florida State its biggest lead.
Stanford mounted a late comeback but could not close the gap before McCray V sealed the win for Florida State with a dunk. “He has led the team in assists in 20 games this season and leads the ACC in total assists,” according to team officials.
Freshman guard Ebuka Okorie led Stanford with 26 points and four assists.
Florida State will next travel to face Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion on Saturday, February 7 at 4:00 p.m.
