WCSO dispatchers have received several reports today of a potential jury duty scam.
The scam generally occurs as follows. The victim receives an unsolicited phone call in which the caller informs the victim they have missed jury duty and has a warrant out for their arrest. The suspect then informs the victim the warrant can be resolved by paying a certain amount of money (often in the form of Greendot or other prepaid cards). The suspect will then inform the victim of how to transfer the funds to themselves.
Sheriff Miller would like everyone to be aware of this scam. WCSO (nor any other law enforcement organization) will never call you and inform you that you need to pay any sort of fine or fee to resolve a legal situation. In the instance that we have to issue an actual arrest warrant for someone(such as the one referenced in this scam) we don’t call, we are happy to go visit them in person.
Please if you feel like you are being scammed or defrauded in any way hang up and if need be call the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office to file a report, 850-745-7100.
