WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Neal Dunn (Florida-02) has commended Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) for their efforts to ensure the safety of Floridians in Israel. In a statement, Congressman Dunn expressed his gratitude towards Governor DeSantis and FDEM for prioritizing the well-being of Floridians and taking proactive measures to bring them back home.
"In Florida, we do things differently. We roll up our sleeves and get things done, like we have with the many natural disasters we've faced," said Congressman Dunn. "What Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) are doing with these repatriation flights is no different. We have many Floridians in Israel, and we must get them to safety. Thank you, Governor DeSantis and FDEM, for putting Floridians first and ensuring they're out of harm's way."
Congressman Dunn also highlighted the disparity in costs between the FDEM flights and the U.S. State Department flights. While the FDEM flights are provided at no cost to Floridians, the State Department flights require repayment. Congressman Dunn expressed his concern over this discrepancy and vowed to address the issue.
"While the FDEM flights cost Floridians nothing, the U.S. State Department flights involve repayment. I'm looking to remedy this. No American should have to hesitate to ask for help when they are escaping terrorist attacks and warzone areas," Dunn continued.
The background information provided sheds light on the State Department Basic Authorities Act, which requires participants to repay travel costs through a Repatriation Loan Program. Failure to repay the loan in time can result in high interest and penalties.
Congressman Dunn's statement emphasizes the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of American citizens abroad, particularly in times of conflict and crisis. The efforts of Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Division of Emergency Management are commendable as they work towards bringing Floridians back home safely.
