A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Florida Secretary of State - Elections Division on February 6, 2025. The request, made by us at Tallahassee Sun, sought comprehensive information about all candidates running in the upcoming spring elections.
The specific details requested included the full names of the candidates (first, middle, and last), the office they are running for, and their jurisdiction. We also asked for the party affiliation of each candidate.
In addition to these basic details about each candidate's candidacy, we also requested contact information for each individual. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional. We await a response from the Florida Secretary of State - Elections Division regarding this important request.
