Decrease in number of white students enrolled in Leon County districts in 2023-24 school year

There were 12,841 white students enrolled in Leon County districts in the 2023-24 school year, a 2.5% decrease from the 13,175 white students in the previous school year, according to the Florida Department of Education.

Data showed that Leon County welcomed a total of 34,909 students at the time. Among them, white students comprised 36.8% of the student body to be the second most represented ethnicity in the county. The most represented ethnicity was Black, accounting for 41.3% of the students (14,421).

Among the three districts in Leon County, Leon County Schools District recorded the highest enrollment of white students in the 2023-24 school year, with a total of 11,657 students, making up 36.7% of the school's total student body. This marks a 0.7% decrease from 37.4% of white students in the district during the previous school year.

Gov. DeSantis has approved an education budget of over $28 billion for the 2024-25 school year. The new budget includes more than $1 billion earmarked exclusively for teacher salaries to better address the teacher shortage the state faces.

According to the National Education Association (NEA), Florida ranks 50th in the U.S. in terms of teacher salaries, only ahead of West Virginia.
